Edinburgh workshops

Alongside learning what we can learn about how people think and feel about climate change from reading their creative writing, this research is also interested in exploring what impact writing about climate change might have on people – for example, whether it changes how they feel, or whether it encourages them to take any other climate action.

If you submit a story to the project, you will be able to express interest in joining online workshops open to those across Scotland; workshops will also be running with an existing group in Glasgow; and there is currently an open call for anyone who would like to join a series of six in-person workshops in Edinburgh.

What to expect from the workshops

This series of six workshops offer a supportive, relaxed space to explore feelings about climate change through creative writing. You don’t need any previous writing experience or specialist knowledge about climate change to join the workshops – just an interest in taking part.

Over the course of the six sessions, you will:

  • Have space for discussion and reflection around climate, nature, and the environment
  • Be led through short creative writing exercises focused on how to write about nature and climate
  • Develop a piece of written work that reflects your personal connection to climate change.
  • Be able to share work (if you want to!) for feedback and further discussion

These workshops will be facilitated by the PhD researcher behind this project, Rhiannon Bull, who is also a writer and has previous experience facilitating creative writing workshops, with support from the Edinburgh Communities Climate Action Network (ECCAN).

Those who take part will also be asked to meet with Rhiannon for a short online interview before and after the series of six workshops.

When and where are the workshops?

  •  Thursdays, 6-8pm, starting January 22nd and finishing February 26th, 2026
  • Located at the ECCAN premises in central Edinburgh
  • You don’t need any previous writing experience or climate expertise
  • You’ll also be asked to meet the researcher for a quick (45 minute) online interview before and after the workshop series

You can find out more and book your place on Eventbrite. If you still have questions, feel free to contact Rhiannon.

Can't make the workshops?

If you can’t make the workshops but still want to contribute to the research project, we’d love to read your story.
